Chit Chat Tuesday With Nadia Fauzi Co-founder And Creative Director Of The Natty

Chit Chat Tuesday With Nadia Fauzi Co-founder And Creative Director Of The Natty

In this edition of Chit Chat Tuesday we get to know Nadia Fauzi, more commonly known by her Instagram persona @grungeee, and the Co-founder and Creative Director Of ‘The Natty’.

After graduating with a degree in Finance, Nadia has been involved in working for her families business.  When Nadia became pregnant with baby number two after a gap of almost 12 years she was not impressed with the choice of maternity wear as it did not reflect her own minimalist fashion aesthetic. Nadia wanted clothes that were stylish and classic, yet could work double duty whether she was pregnant or not.

Coupling her great creative vision with the business skills gained whilst working in the family business, Nadia was more than confident to take the leap into creating her own line of womenswear and childrenswear and hence The Natty was born.

The Natty’s design essentials mix ethical and sustainable materials with attention to detail and a clean and functional aesthetic. The ladies line extends to gender-neutral children and babies clothing, which is big on stylish functionality and playful minimalism.

JS: What is the story behind the brand?

NF: Natty means a person or an article of clothing that is smart and fashionable. The Natty represents a carefully curated collection, depicting design elements and materials that I would choose for me and my family.

JS: Where do you source your design inspiration?

NF: Magazines, the streets, movies and TV shows.

JS: Why did you choose to start designing clothing for children?

NF: I aim to promote a more sustainable way of buying clothes by offering easy-to-wear and timeless collection that would take away the pressure on having to buy new clothes as the weather changes.

JS: What’s your favourite part of designing clothing for children?

NF: Playing with lines, colours and fabrics.

JS: What is the most important element when you are designing clothing for children?

NF: Functionality.

JS: What’s your must-have piece from your current collection?

NF: Baby & Child – the soft organic cotton jumpers.  For women the long dress with side pockets.

JS: How would you describe your personal style?

NF: Clean and functional, chic and timeless.

JS: Who are your style icons, both past and present?

NF: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Olivia Palermo & Alexa Chung.

JS: Just for fun, what book are you currently reading and what are you listening to right now?

NF: Still trying to finish Educated by Tara Westover. Wish there are more hours in a day!

JS: Which are your favourite cultural magazine publications? Favourite podcasts?

NF: Offscreen, Kinfolk and Cereal.

Podcasts: How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Woman’s Hour.

JS: Can you share a favourite destination you’ve enjoyed with your family?

NF: It’s a bit hard to choose only one as I’ve enjoyed all our trips together but if I had to choose then it’d have to be Lombok! It was a trip we took back in 2013 and my eldest was only 7 years old. We stayed on a secluded cove with two pristine white sand beaches and it is totally “off the grid” with no WiFi or mobile coverage so we got to relax and unwind for six whole days with no interruptions from the outside world! It happens to be my son’s favourite holiday with us too.

JS: Is there a motivational or inspirational quote that really inspires?

“You are capable of more than you know. Choose a goal that seems right for you and strive to be the best, however hard the path. Aim high. Behave honourably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give.” – E. O. Wilson.
