Q & A with Julia Kabelsalat

JS: What led you to start your personal project The Close Up Society?

JK: This is a project which began taking shape this year as a declaration of intents or manifesto against intolerance. Through my experience with children, I have witnessed how they engage in conducts which foment marginalisation and the stigmatisation and persecution of “otherness”. It is 2019, and faggot is still being used as an insult. Children of colour are still being racialised. Children with any kind of difference in their psychical or physical abilities are mocked.

JS: What did you want to show through your project?

JK: Since I cannot wave a wand and change the world, this project’s aim is no more than inviting you to share our space, to show the beauty of diversity, and to dare the beholder to find out who is a model and who is not.

JS: How did you go about setting up the shoots?

JK: On May 2019 I had the first gathering in a park in Madrid, and the idea is to keep on having them in different cities with different people. I wanted to use the same background and 15 or 30 minutes of their natural mood: nostalgic, dishevelled, smiling, toothless… There, under the flashlights, children will be portrayed. Children whose beauty ranges between the normativity of those who are the image of well-known brands, to that of a stigmatised minority, discriminated because of psychic or physical characteristics.

I got more than 150 applications for Madrid’s meeting, and the families came from various places around Spain to participate in the session. I could not be more grateful to all of those who showed interest and helped me. Thank you for helping me find the stories that build this puzzle, our small contribution to inclusive education and to a childhood free from judgment.
